H.S. Dillon, who fought for Indonesia’s farmers and the poor – has left us….

I had the honour of knowing H.S. Dillon who was the first Indonesian Sikh to be buried at Indonesia’s National Heroes’ Cem­etery.  He was an elegant man with both wit and humour who did a lot for Indonesia's farmers and the poor. He for­mulates the Declaration of the Rights of Indonesian Farmers when he was with the Indone­sian Human Rights Commission and this provided the foundations for the promulgation of Law no 19 of 2013 for the Protection and Empowerment of Farmers. It in turn became the ba­sis for the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Peasants and Other People Working in Rural Areas which was ratified in New York on the 17th of December 2018.
